About Madeline

Madeline, the founding director of Mad About Music, is a classically-trained pianist and violinist recognised for her gift of teaching music in both the public and private sectors. Having had her first piano lesson at the age of 5, she naturally developed a keen and sensitive ear towards identifying the complexities of harmonies and rhythms in the music she grew up playing and listening to. Music was more than just a mix of sounds to her - it was pure magic in allowing her to feel all sorts of emotions and she knew that she could harness this superpower in her to impact the world. After completing her studies in the piano, Madeline chose the violin as her second instrument at the age of 14 as a way to diversify her musical expression. Under the influence of her mother, a present-age renown local singer who is part of the Xinyao group and has been actively performing alongside local popstars Liang Wern Fook and Li Fei Hui, Madeline, too, wanted a place to use her talent in music to enrich her community.

During her adolescent years, Madeline developed a mature level of stage confidence through numerous opportunities to perform in public and serve the pressing needs around her. It was out of this desire and pressure willingly placed on herself, that paved her way to success as a musician. She took pride in being one of the few pianists who were willing and able to serve in the music ministry consistently over a decade through self-correction and experimentation. Little did she know that this would lead her to find immense musical joy and freedom in exploring various improvisation styles and creative ways to connect with her audience and congregation. She was also specially chosen as a violinist to play in her church's inaugural string quartet opening and has performed Beethoven's Ode to Joy as well as other famous classics and familiar hymns in celebration of the unforgettable, momentous event.

Since 2017, Madeline is a MOE-trained music educator who has widely taught in prominent local schools such as Henry Park Primary School, Greenridge Secondary School and Bukit Panjang Primary School, and in private schools like Ossia Music School. She is well-equipped with the updated music pedagogy and has been applying her modern teaching techniques and rich musical knowledge to her one-to-one piano, violin and music theory lessons with more than 60 students. Her passion in music and teaching has taken her to places which she never thought she would.

In 2023, Madeline decided to dedicate her life to establishing her own music school, known as Mad About Music. She actively crafts her own music programme which caters to the unique learning styles and preferences of her students, while ensuring that the process of honing their musicality is a fun and smooth one. Today, her students have achieved 100% passes in ABRSM track records and 40% distinctions. Regardless of results, she encourages all her students to perform on stage at annual recitals and competitions to showcase their musical talent and learning progress as a guaranteed way of building stage confidence like she did.

Madeline strongly believes in holistic music education from the ground up, and not merely taking shortcuts to help students achieve distinctions in exams. This translates into how she purposefully conducts her lesson with her students; It includes developing a solid understanding of music theory in order to enjoy sight-reading like a breeze, coupled with attaining healthy body postures from the get-go to avoid potential strains and injury. Unlike academic subjects, Madeline considers music a life-long learning journey and it is never too late to enrol into her classes. Bringing a positive attitude to class, accompanied by discipline in consistent music practice at home is far more important to her than one's ability and background in music. At present, her students primarily range from age 5 to 52 but regardless of age, Madeline seizes every opportunity to forge deep, life-long friendships with her students.

In her past-time, Madeline enjoys arranging and writing music as a form of self-expression and reminiscing special memories in her life. Additionally, she takes joy in organising jam sessions with her musically-inclined friends on the guitar, piano and violin while belting out her favourite pop songs with them. In 2019, she took her musical social activities to the next level by signing up to perform as a band in the Jurong Open Mic concert. They took on the stage and performed pop covers such as Havannah x Senorita (Medley), Falling In Love With You and Somewhere Over the Rainbow. If she could, she would do it all over again because of how much fun she had with her friends.
